Garden Trellis

Garden trellis quietly does a lot of jobs. It gives climbing plants something to grow up, adds height and privacy to fences and walls, and divides a garden up without shutting out the light. Good trellis is part of the design as much as a plant support, so we treat it with the same care as our fencing.

Premier lattice garden trellis panel installed by Tatton Fencing

Options & styles

We supply and install premier lattice trellis in diamond and square patterns, with different size squares depending on how much screening you want. It works as a topper above solid panels, as a standalone screen around a seating area or bin store, and fixed to a wall for roses, clematis and honeysuckle.

Why Tatton Fencing

Trellis usually goes somewhere you see it up close, above a fence or next to a patio, so the quality of the fitting shows. We fit it square, level and properly fixed, ready to take the weight of a mature climber in a wind. All our work comes with a 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

What size squares should I choose?

Smaller squares give more screening and a finer look. Larger squares feel lighter and suit vigorous climbers. Seen side by side the choice is usually obvious, and we can show you both.

Can trellis go on top of my existing fence?

Usually, if the posts are tall enough and sound enough to take it. We will check the posts first and extend or replace them where needed rather than loading up tired timber.

Will trellis hold heavy climbers?

Our framed trellis will. A mature wisteria is a different conversation, and if that is the plan we will build for it.

Timber is a living material, and no two fences or gates are quite the same. Here’s what to expect as yours settles in.

Slatted & Venetian Fencing

Slatted fence panels, often called venetian fencing, have become the go to look for modern gardens. The horizontal slats give you privacy while still letting light and air through, and the gaps between them stop the boundary feeling like a wall. It is the fence people take photos of.

Options & styles

We build venetian slatted fencing with 2-inch or 3-inch slats, in good quality redwood and other premium timbers, to whatever height you need. If you want more privacy, we can fit a black membrane behind the slats so you keep the slatted look but cannot see through it. Venetian wall toppers add height to an existing wall without the bulk of a solid panel, and venetian slatted gates carry the same lines through your gateways. We also install the Jacksons venetian range, which is guaranteed against rot for 25 years. That includes their venetian hit and miss panel, which you cannot see through and which looks the same from both sides.

Why Tatton Fencing

Horizontal slats show up every mistake. If a post is a few millimetres out of plumb you will see it right along the run. Slatted fencing has to be done carefully, and the photos in this gallery are all jobs we have done ourselves. Every job comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

Which slat size should I choose?

2-inch slats give a finer, more modern line. 3-inch slats look bolder and a bit warmer. We can show you both before you decide.

Do slatted fences give enough privacy?

Standing at normal distance, the overlap of the slats blocks most of the view. For more privacy we can add a black membrane behind the slats. For total privacy, the Jacksons venetian hit and miss panel cannot be seen through and still looks slatted.

Can venetian slats go on top of a wall?

Yes. Venetian wall toppers are one of our more popular choices. They add privacy and style to a walled garden without the heaviness of solid panels.

Fence Panels

Fence panels are how most gardens in this country get fenced. We supply and install them right across the range, from budget panels for a straightforward boundary through to premium panels built to last decades. Whatever the budget, the installation gets the same care, because a panel is only as good as the posts and groundwork holding it up.

Options & styles

We can fit almost any style. Vertical featherboard. Hit and miss panels, horizontal or vertical, where the alternating boards give you privacy but let the wind through, which is a real help in exposed gardens. Tongue and groove, horizontal or vertical. Woven panels. Venetian slatted panels. And decorative ranges like the Jacksons Chilham, Canterbury Combi and Urban. Trellis toppers and matching gates are available for all of them. The Jacksons ranges last the longest, and they are backed by a 25-year guarantee against rot.

Why Tatton Fencing

We install panels as a complete system, with posts, gravel boards, panels and capping all done properly, so every part of the fence lasts as long as the panel should. Our 2-year workmanship guarantee sits alongside the manufacturer’s guarantee on the panels.

Your questions answered

Which fence panel lasts longest?

The Jacksons ranges. They use pressure treated timber and carry a 25-year guarantee against rot. Budget panels cost less to buy and will not last as long. We are happy to quote for both so you can compare.

Do you have panels that look the same on both sides?

Yes. The Jacksons double sided ranges, including their vertical and horizontal hit and miss, Chilham and venetian hit and miss panels, look the same from both faces, so you and your neighbour both get the good side.

Do you just supply, or install as well?

We are an installation company first. Every fence we supply, we fit properly, posts and gravel boards included.

Post & Rail Fencing

Post and rail fencing is the traditional fence of the British countryside and one of the most practical you can buy. It marks out paddocks, fields and larger gardens at a sensible cost per metre and looks right in a rural setting from the day it goes in.

Options & styles

We install sawn post and rail, with three rails as standard and two or four where the job calls for it. We also install half round post and rail for a softer look and cleft chestnut fencing where a traditional estate feel is wanted. For equestrian customers we build horse arena fencing with kick boards and gates designed for daily use. Field gates and pedestrian gates finish off every run. If you are keeping heavy livestock in, post and rail should have electric wire fencing added to it to prevent the animals leaning on it. We can even fix stock netting or mesh to the posts to make it more secure for your dog or smaller livestock.

Why Tatton Fencing

Paddock and equestrian fencing needs to be solid, sensibly designed and built with stock in mind. That means rails fixed securely and posts set properly. That is how we build every run, and all our work comes with a 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

How many rails do I need?

Three is the standard for most paddocks and boundaries. Two will do for simply marking a boundary. Four adds some security for smaller stock, or where you want extra height.

How long does post and rail last?

Roughly 15 years is a fair expectation for pressure treated post and rail, though it depends a great deal on ground conditions. Cleft chestnut can go well beyond that.

Can you fence a horse arena?

Yes. We build arena fencing with kick boards and gates positioned so you can get in and out safely with a horse in hand.

Picket Fencing

Picket fencing is a friendly sort of fence. It is low enough to chat over and smart enough to suit a cottage garden or a new build frontage. It marks the edge of your property without hiding it, keeps small children and dogs in, and adds kerb appeal for a modest cost.

Options & styles

We install timber picket fencing with flat top, pointed top and rounded top pales, in heights to suit front gardens and path edges, with picket gates to match. We fit every picket individually on site, so the spacing can be set to suit the look you want, whether that is close and formal or open and cottagey. If you want something with more character, our cleft oak or chestnut pale fencing uses split oak or chestnut pales for a much more rustic look, which weathers to a silver grey and lasts for decades without treatment.

Why Tatton Fencing

A picket fence sits at the front where everyone sees it, so even spacing and level tops matter. That is how we build them, and all our work comes with a 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

What height should a picket fence be?

Most front garden picket fencing is between 0.9m and 1.2m. That is enough to mark the boundary and keep a small dog in while keeping the garden open.

What is special about cleft oak or chestnut pale fencing?

The pales are split along the grain rather than sawn, which keeps the wood’s fibres intact. That makes them very durable without any treatment and gives a much more rustic look than sawn timber.

Painted or natural?

Pressure treated softwood picket can be left natural or painted. Cleft oak or chestnut is best left to weather on its own. We will advise depending on the look you want and how much upkeep you are happy with.

Metal Railings

Metal railings give a boundary a sense of permanence that timber does not. A well made railing fence becomes part of the property rather than just the edge of it. Whether you are framing a front garden, securing a boundary without building a wall, or replacing railings that were taken out years ago, the right design lifts the whole frontage.

Options & styles

We install vertical bar railings, which can be finished with a choice of finial tops, from decorative spear designs to plain balls, and bow top railings, where the bars curve over in hoops. Matching railing gates are available. We only use very high quality railings from our trusted supplier, powder coated over a galvanised finish. Black is the usual choice, but other colours are available.

Why Tatton Fencing

With railings, every post shows and every line is on display at the front of your house. We measure and set them out carefully and fix them properly. Every installation comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

Will railings suit my property?

Yes. The finial style, the type of railing and the colour can all be chosen to suit, so they work on older frontages and modern houses alike. We can show you examples of jobs we have done.

Do metal railings rust?

Galvanised and powder coated railings resist rust for many years. It is the coating that does the work, which is why we only fit properly finished railings from our trusted supplier.

Can new railings tie in with an existing gate or wall?

Often they can. We can match heights, colours and finial styles so the new run sits comfortably with existing metalwork or brick piers. The bar spacing is fixed by the design, but with the right height and finish it usually ties in well.

Mesh Fencing

Mesh fencing is the answer when you need a secure boundary without blocking light or views. It keeps animals in or out and protects areas of the garden while staying fairly unobtrusive. Modern weldmesh panels are rigid and neatly finished.

Options & styles

We install rigid mesh panel fencing in a range of heights and finishes, fixed to steel posts in a matching colour, with mesh gates to match for pedestrian and wider access. We use it for garden boundaries, dog runs, poultry pens and animal enclosures. We have built everything from a discreet boundary fence to a complete chicken pen.

Why Tatton Fencing

Mesh fencing looks simple, but it only looks right if every post is set true and every panel sits level. We set out mesh runs with the same care as our premium fencing, and all our work comes with a 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

Is mesh fencing secure?

Rigid weldmesh panels are hard to cut and hard to climb, which is why the same systems are used around schools and commercial sites. For garden security it is one of the strongest options there is.

Will it rust?

Good mesh panels are galvanised and usually powder coated as well. Fitted properly they last for many years without any attention.

Can you build animal enclosures?

Yes. Mesh suits dog runs, poultry pens and garden enclosures well, and keeps your animals safely in.

Estate Fencing & Railings

Estate fencing is the slim metal railing you see around parkland and country houses. It has horizontal rails and narrow uprights, so it marks a boundary without blocking the view. That is why it remains popular for period homes, paddocks and any garden where the view is the point.

Options & styles

We install traditional estate railings and modern estate railing systems with cleaner lines for newer properties. Matching estate gates are available, from single pedestrian gates up to wide field or drive openings. Any colour can be applied. The traditional system is installed galvanised and painted afterwards. The Jacksons estate panel system comes pre painted in the colour of your choice.

Why Tatton Fencing

Estate fencing follows the land, and getting the rails to flow through dips and rises takes care. We set out every run so the finished fence looks like it belongs there. Every installation comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

Is estate fencing suitable for livestock?

It is fine for sheep. It is not ideal on its own for larger livestock such as cattle and horses, because bigger animals can push against it and make it lean. Tell us what the fence needs to hold and we will advise.

Can it be any colour?

Yes. The traditional system can be painted after installation in whatever colour you like, or you can leave it galvanised, and the Jacksons pre painted panel system offers the same choice with a factory finish. Black is the classic and looks best against grass and trees.

Traditional or modern?

For a period property or parkland setting, the traditional system with its softer detail usually looks right. For a newer house, the modern system suits better. We can show you both from jobs we have done.

Dog Proof Fencing

Dog proof fencing does one job, which is to help keep your dog in the garden. Most types of fence can be used for this. The one we install most often is mesh fencing, because it suits people who do not want a solid boundary blocking the view but still need to keep their dog at home.

Options & styles

Our mesh dog fencing uses thin green coated wire with small gaps that a dog will not fit through, fixed securely at ground level onto round timber posts usually knocked into the ground. Most of the dog fencing we install is 1m or 1.2m high, and we can go higher if you have a bigger dog or a keen jumper. If you want privacy as well, close boarded timber fencing does both jobs.

Why Tatton Fencing

We plan dog fencing with dogs in mind. That means looking for gaps, weak spots and the places a dog is likely to test before we start. Every installation comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

How high does a dog proof fence need to be?

Most of what we install is 1m or 1.2m high, which suits the majority of dogs. For athletic breeds we can go higher. Tell us about your dog and we will advise.

Can a dog get through the mesh?

The mesh we use has small gaps that a dog will not fit through, small breeds and puppies included, and it is fixed securely at ground level.

Do I have to have a solid fence?

No, and that is why mesh is our most popular dog fencing. It keeps the boundary secure without shutting out the view, which is ideal if you have a nice outlook or a bigger garden.

Feather Edge Fencing

Feather edge fencing, also called closeboard fencing, is the traditional British privacy fence. Vertical boards overlap each other on a solid frame, so there are no gaps and no weak points. Panel fencing arrives in fixed sections. Our continuous featherboard fencing is built board by board on site, so it follows your boundary exactly.

Options & styles

We build continuous feather edge fencing to any height and length. We fit an extra horizontal rail and use a bigger board overlap than the industry standard, which helps stop the boards warping over time. Every fence has a timber gravel board along the bottom and a capping rail on top. If you want it to look good from both sides, we can double board it, fitting the boards between the posts on the back. For the longest possible life we can build it on posts that carry a 25-year guarantee. Matching closeboard gates are available.

Why Tatton Fencing

Because it is built on site rather than bolted together from panels, feather edge shows the quality of the work. Board spacing, rail fixing and post setting are all there to see in the finished fence. It is fencing we build week in, week out, and every fence comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

What is the difference between feather edge and panel fencing?

Feather edge is built in place as one continuous run, so it follows your boundary exactly and single boards can be replaced if they ever need to be. Panels come in fixed sizes and get replaced as whole sections.

Is it good for awkward boundaries?

Yes. It follows slopes naturally, and because we can vary the post spacing it also works well where there are a lot of trees. The fence can run right up to them and between them.

How long does feather edge fencing last?

With pressure treated timber, a gravel board keeping the boards off the ground and a capping rail on top, it is one of the longer lasting timber fences you can have. Using 25-year guaranteed posts looks after the part of the fence that works hardest.
