Post & Rail Fencing

Post and rail fencing is the traditional fence of the British countryside and one of the most practical you can buy. It marks out paddocks, fields and larger gardens at a sensible cost per metre and looks right in a rural setting from the day it goes in.

Options & styles

We install sawn post and rail, with three rails as standard and two or four where the job calls for it. We also install half round post and rail for a softer look and cleft chestnut fencing where a traditional estate feel is wanted. For equestrian customers we build horse arena fencing with kick boards and gates designed for daily use. Field gates and pedestrian gates finish off every run. If you are keeping heavy livestock in, post and rail should have electric wire fencing added to it to prevent the animals leaning on it. We can even fix stock netting or mesh to the posts to make it more secure for your dog or smaller livestock.

Why Tatton Fencing

Paddock and equestrian fencing needs to be solid, sensibly designed and built with stock in mind. That means rails fixed securely and posts set properly. That is how we build every run, and all our work comes with a 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

How many rails do I need?

Three is the standard for most paddocks and boundaries. Two will do for simply marking a boundary. Four adds some security for smaller stock, or where you want extra height.

How long does post and rail last?

Roughly 15 years is a fair expectation for pressure treated post and rail, though it depends a great deal on ground conditions. Cleft chestnut can go well beyond that.

Can you fence a horse arena?

Yes. We build arena fencing with kick boards and gates positioned so you can get in and out safely with a horse in hand.

Timber is a living material, and no two fences or gates are quite the same. Here’s what to expect as yours settles in.
