Garden & Side Gates

A garden gate works harder than any fence panel. It can be opened many times a day, leaned on, slammed, and expected to keep the dog and children in and everyone else out. Our garden and side gates are built and hung to cope with that, in styles that match the fencing around them.

Options & styles

We supply and install side gates in solid tongue and groove, including the Jacksons gates with their 25-year guarantee against rot, venetian slatted gates to go with slatted fencing, arch top and woven styles, and maintenance free aluminium gates in a range of designs. Gates can be made to match your fence line, with matching panels above or beside the opening where needed. Coded locks, key locks and traditional latches finish the job.

Why Tatton Fencing

Most gate problems are hanging problems. We set proper gate posts and hang every gate square on good quality adjustable hinges, so when the timber moves with the seasons the gate can be easily adjusted and kept swinging and closing as it should. Every gate comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

What is the best material for a side gate?

Solid tongue and groove timber is the traditional secure choice. Aluminium wins if you want zero maintenance. Venetian slatted gates suit modern fencing. We will help you choose for your setting.

Can you match a gate to my existing fence?

Yes. Matching the gate to the fence is how we prefer to do it, whether that is featherboard, slatted or panels.

What security should a side gate have?

At the very least, slide bolts. We normally fit two, one at the top and one at the bottom, and you can padlock them. A coded lock is a popular upgrade if you want to go keyless. Side gates are a known way in for burglars, so it is worth having decent hardware. Have a look at our gate furniture page for the options.

Do timber side gates move with the weather?

Yes. Timber expands and contracts naturally through the year. We fit adjustable hinges as standard so any movement is easily corrected, and regular oiling helps keep it to a minimum. Rot is covered by the guarantees. Natural movement is just real wood doing what real wood does.

Timber is a living material, and no two fences or gates are quite the same. Here’s what to expect as yours settles in.
