Garden & Side Gates

A garden gate works harder than any fence panel. It can be opened many times a day, leaned on, slammed, and expected to keep the dog and children in and everyone else out. Our garden and side gates are built and hung to cope with that, in styles that match the fencing around them.

Options & styles

We supply and install side gates in solid tongue and groove, including the Jacksons gates with their 25-year guarantee against rot, venetian slatted gates to go with slatted fencing, arch top and woven styles, and maintenance free aluminium gates in a range of designs. Gates can be made to match your fence line, with matching panels above or beside the opening where needed. Coded locks, key locks and traditional latches finish the job.

Why Tatton Fencing

Most gate problems are hanging problems. We set proper gate posts and hang every gate square on good quality adjustable hinges, so when the timber moves with the seasons the gate can be easily adjusted and kept swinging and closing as it should. Every gate comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

What is the best material for a side gate?

Solid tongue and groove timber is the traditional secure choice. Aluminium wins if you want zero maintenance. Venetian slatted gates suit modern fencing. We will help you choose for your setting.

Can you match a gate to my existing fence?

Yes. Matching the gate to the fence is how we prefer to do it, whether that is featherboard, slatted or panels.

What security should a side gate have?

At the very least, slide bolts. We normally fit two, one at the top and one at the bottom, and you can padlock them. A coded lock is a popular upgrade if you want to go keyless. Side gates are a known way in for burglars, so it is worth having decent hardware. Have a look at our gate furniture page for the options.

Do timber side gates move with the weather?

Yes. Timber expands and contracts naturally through the year. We fit adjustable hinges as standard so any movement is easily corrected, and regular oiling helps keep it to a minimum. Rot is covered by the guarantees. Natural movement is just real wood doing what real wood does.

Timber is a living material, and no two fences or gates are quite the same. Here’s what to expect as yours settles in.

Gate Furniture & Locks

Gate furniture is the difference between a gate that is a pleasure to use and one the whole family fights with. Latches, locks, handles and hinges are small parts doing constant work, and good ones cost very little compared to the irritation of bad ones.

Options & styles

We fit the full range of gate hardware. Coded locks, single sided or double sided, for keyless security on garden and side gates. Traditional key operated gate locks. Ring latches and suffolk latches for classic timber gates. Premium handle and lock sets such as the J-lock for Jacksons gates. Everything we fit is made for outdoor use, in finishes that suit the gate.

Why Tatton Fencing

Our gates come with good quality standard furniture included, so every gate works properly from the day it is hung. If you would prefer something different, a coded lock or a particular latch or handle, just tell us when we quote and we will fit that instead. Our 2-year workmanship guarantee covers the fitting.

Your questions answered

Are coded gate locks secure?

A good mechanical coded lock is a real step up from a latch. There are no keys to lose or copy and you can change the code whenever you like. We fit trusted models that are proven outdoors.

Single sided or double sided coded lock?

A single sided lock needs the code from outside only, with free exit from inside, which suits most gardens. A double sided lock controls both directions and is useful where you want extra security.

Can you upgrade the lock on my existing gate?

Usually, if the gate is sound. We will have a look at the gate and the stile and fit the best hardware it will take.

Driveway & Entrance Gates

Driveway gates are the first thing a visitor sees and the last line of a property’s security. Good entrance gates add presence, privacy and real value to a home. We supply and install gates that are worth arriving through.

Options & styles

We cover every style of entrance. Hardwood timber gates in iroko and good quality redwood. Aluminium entrance gates that will never twist or rot. Traditional 5 bar and 8 bar field style gates for rural entrances. Manual sliding gates for drives where a slope or a lack of space rules out swing gates. Our most popular driveway gates are the Jacksons ranges, including the Hythe and the Rye. They are built around a steel internal frame and carry a 25-year guarantee against rot.

Why Tatton Fencing

A gate is a moving structure, and it all comes down to how it is hung. We set gate posts in proper foundations, hang every leaf to swing true, and fit good quality latches and locks. Timber gates move with the seasons, so we hang ours on adjustable hinges, which makes it simple to keep them swinging properly over the years. Every installation comes with our 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Your questions answered

Timber or aluminium?

Timber looks warmer and more traditional and suits older properties. Aluminium needs no maintenance and stays perfectly true. Both last for many years if they are done well. It comes down to the look you want and how much upkeep you are happy with, and we will give you an honest view.

Swing or sliding?

Swing gates suit most drives. If the drive slopes up from the entrance or space is tight, a sliding gate does what a swing gate cannot.

Can the gates be automated?

We do not install gate automation ourselves. If you are planning to automate the gates, now or later, tell us when we quote, because it changes how the gates are made and installed. Getting that right at the start makes the automation company’s job much easier.

Will a timber gate warp or drop over time?

Timber gates naturally expand, contract and can warp over time. That is why we hang them on adjustable hinges, so minor movement can be corrected in minutes, and why we recommend regular oiling to reduce excessive warping. The exception is the Jacksons entrance gate range. Thanks to their steel internal frame and guaranteed timber, they are the only timber driveway gates that do not need oiling. The guarantees cover rot. Natural timber movement is part of owning a timber gate, not a defect.
